Getting older brings with it many indignities that women must bear, and while beauty may only be skin deep, it’s still hard to part with youthful looking skin. And as if wrinkles and aged skin weren’t insulting enough, Mother Nature often has yet another mischievous trick up her sleeve – adult onset acne.

Menopause and Your Skin

For many women of menopausal or pre-menopausal age, the changing hormone levels often brings with them oily and acne prone skin. From blackheads to cystic acne, many skin problems will erupt right alongside wrinkles. Not only is this just not fair, it also makes it far more difficult to tend to your thinner skin by using lotion, as the lotion can often just exacerbates the acne.

Acne itself can be caused by a number of factors, including:
• Genetics
• Diet
• Hygiene
• Environmental toxins
• Stress
• Allergens

However, if most of these causes are not present and you are close to or are actually in the throes of menopause, you can almost bet that your skin issue is a hormonal problem. Menopause will bring sharply changing oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels, which often increase the oil and sebum production on your skin. This leads to blocked pores and in some cases, painful and large cystic acne.

The Catch-22 of Face Creams

Since many face creams and skin lotions are created to provide extra moisture to your skin, it can block your pores even further and inflame your already acne-prone skin. This can, sadly, force many women choose between softer and younger looking skin or clear skin.

While this conundrum can be extremely frustrating, you don’t have to give up on your facial moisturizers. You just need to find one that won’t block your pores.

Salicylic Acid Is Your Friend

A face cream for aging skin is far less likely to exacerbate oily or acne prone skin if it contains ingredients such as salicylic acid. Many good quality French skin care products (and who knows beauty better than the French?) offer salicylic acid as a primary ingredient because it can also help fight wrinkles as well as acne.

Originally derived from the willow tree, salicylic acid has many superb qualities for skin problems. Interestingly enough, not only will this ingredient help exfoliate dead skin and clear those blocked pores, it also has an anti-inflammatory agent and can help soothe eruptions and soften fine lines. The anti-microbial properties also help prevent new outbreaks. This fabulous chemical can also stimulate new collagen production, leading to plumper and much healthier looking (not to mention younger) skin.

When looking for the right French skin care products that won’t irritate your acne, be sure to avoid any oils, such as petroleum jelly, mineral oil or lanolin. All wonderful moisturizers, to be sure, but oil based moisturizers should be avoided if you already have an overproduction of skin oils. Use water based moisturizers that contain salicylic acids, and you have a winning combo for younger and clearer looking skin.
